Primary covers Year 4–6 entry (sat by Year 3–5 students). Level 1 is for Year 7 entry (sat by Year 6), Level 2 for Year 9 entry (Year 8 students), and Level 3 for Year 11 entry (Year 10 students). Difficulty increases with each level.
The format is consistent (Written Expression, Humanities, Mathematics for secondary levels), but schools may use different levels depending on the entry year. Schools can choose online or paper-based delivery.
Most schools hold the test between February and June. The exact date varies by school — some offer multiple sitting dates. Schools register their preferred date with ACER.
