Do Year 11 marks count toward my ATAR?
Year 11 Preliminary marks do not directly count toward your ATAR. However, the content and skills built in Year 11 directly underpin Year 12, and your internal rank is built from Year 11 habits.
What is Preliminary vs HSC?
The Preliminary course is the Year 11 foundation year. The HSC course is Year 12 and includes an external NESA exam that counts for 50% of your final mark. Year 11 is 100% internally assessed by your school.
How is Year 11 assessed?
Year 11 English Advanced is assessed 100% internally by your school. 100% internal school assessment. No external exam in Year 11. Tasks typically include essays, creative writing responses, close analysis tasks and multimodal presentations across all modules.
How does Year 11 connect to Year 12?
Strong Preliminary English Advanced performance directly supports Year 12. The analytical frameworks, vocabulary and close reading skills built in Year 11 are the foundation for all four HSC modules.
Is Year 11 harder than Year 10?
Yes. Senior school requires more independent learning, more sophisticated writing and greater depth than junior school. The adjustment takes time - build study habits early.
When should I start HSC preparation?
From the very first day of Year 11. Every lesson and task in Preliminary English Advanced is building your HSC foundation.
Can I change subjects between Year 11 and 12?
Changing subjects between Year 11 and 12 is possible but more disruptive than changing before Year 11. Discuss with your school's careers advisor as early as possible if you are considering a change.
