What Verbal Reasoning Tests

Verbal Reasoning tests the ability to think and reason using words and language. This is not an English or vocabulary test – it tests logical reasoning using verbal information. Students who have strong school English skills are not automatically strong at Verbal Reasoning.

Word Analogies

A is to B as C is to ? – identify the precise relationship between the first pair and apply it to find the second. Relationships include function, category, degree, part-whole and many others.

Classification / Odd One Out

Which word does not belong? Identify the rule linking the group and find the exception.

Verbal Series

Words follow a logical sequence based on meaning, category or relationship. Identify the rule and find the next word.

Logical Deduction

If all X are Y and some Y are Z, what must be true? Tests formal logical reasoning using language statements.

Top Strategies

  1. Define the relationship precisely before looking at options
  2. Test every option against your rule before choosing
  3. Watch for direction and degree – large:enormous is not the same relationship as large:tiny
  4. If stuck after 45 seconds – best guess and move on
  5. Practise daily – 15 verbal reasoning questions every morning builds pattern recognition rapidly
