🔬 About HSC Preliminary Biology
Year 11 – the foundation year

What is Preliminary Biology?

The Preliminary Biology course introduces the major themes of biological science – cells, organisations of living things, ecosystems and evolution. Year 11 builds the conceptual framework and scientific investigation skills that underpin HSC Biology.

Modules Studied

Module Topic What It Covers
Module 1 Cells as the Basis of Life Cell structure and function, organelles, membranes and transport, cell division and the sp…
Module 2 Organisation of Living Things From cells to organisms – tissues, organs, organ systems and their functions. Introduction…
Module 3 Biological Diversity Classification of living things, evolutionary relationships, adaptations and the mechanism…
Module 4 Ecosystem Dynamics Energy flow through ecosystems, nutrient cycling, population dynamics, ecological relation…

Assessment in Year 11

100% internal school assessment including practical investigations, depth study, scientific reports and formal examinations.

⚠️ Year 11 is assessed 100% internally by your school. There is no external NESA exam. However, your internal assessment rank in Year 11 builds the habits and understanding that directly determine your HSC internal rank in Year 12.

How Year 11 Connects to HSC

HSC Biology Modules 5-8 extend directly from Preliminary Modules 1-4. Understanding cells from Module 1 is essential for genetics in Module 5. Understanding ecosystems from Module 3 underpins infectious disease in Module 7.
