🎯 The key insight: ACER tests inference most heavily — nearly half the questions require you to combine information from the text with logical reasoning. The answer is always supported by the text, but rarely stated word-for-word.
👁️ The 3-Read Technique
Read 1 — Skim for structure (90 seconds)
Read the first sentence of each paragraph only. Build a mental map: What is this about? How is it organised? Where is the argument/story heading?
Read 2 — Read questions before deep-reading (1 minute)
Scan all questions for the passage. Your brain will now flag the relevant sentences automatically as you read deeply.
Read 3 — Question by question: locate, don’t memorise
For each question, return to the text. Find the 1–3 relevant sentences. Answer from those sentences — not from memory.

📖 Vocabulary in Context — 4-Step Method
Step 1 — Find the sentence containing the word
Read the full sentence plus the one before and after it.
Step 2 — Cover the target word, guess from context
What would make sense here? What tone does the passage have? What subject is being discussed?
Step 3 — Match your guess to the closest answer option
ACER answer options are usually near-synonyms — pick the one that fits the specific context.
Step 4 — Substitute back in
Mentally replace the word with your chosen answer. Does the sentence still mean the same thing?
⭐ ACER Examiner’s Trick: ACER often includes one ‘distractor’ answer that uses a common meaning of the target word — but the wrong meaning for this context. Always substitute your answer back into the sentence to verify.
📝 Worked Example — Inference Question
Question
“The author’s tone when describing the scientist’s discovery can best be described as…”
(A) dismissive (B) cautiously optimistic (C) overwhelmingly celebratory (D) detached and neutral
Locate
Find the paragraph describing the discovery. Look for: word choices, adjectives, how the scientist’s feelings are described.
Analyse
“The results were promising, if not yet conclusive” — hedged language. “A step forward” — positive but restrained. No exclamation marks, no superlatives.
Eliminate
Dismiss A (no dismissive language) and C (no exclamation/overwhelm). D is wrong (there IS emotion). B = cautiously optimistic ✓
