General Ability (GA) โ€” sometimes called Reasoning Ability or Aptitude โ€” is one of the most important skills assessed in Australian academic competitions and selective school entrance tests. Unlike subject knowledge tests, GA measures how you think, not what you know.

๐Ÿ“‹ The Three GA Strands
  • ๐Ÿ”ค Verbal Reasoning โ€” understanding word relationships, analogies, classifications and verbal logic. Students who read widely tend to build this skill naturally.
  • ๐Ÿ”ข Numerical Reasoning โ€” identifying numerical patterns, sequences and mathematical relationships without complex calculations. Different from school maths โ€” it rewards logical thinking over memorised methods.
  • ๐Ÿ”ท Abstract Reasoning โ€” finding rules in visual sequences, matrices and patterns. Completely independent of language ability or curriculum knowledge โ€” this is pure reasoning ability.
๐ŸŽฏ Where GA Is Tested in Australia
  • NSW OC Test โ€” Thinking Skills + Mathematical Reasoning (Years 4โ€“5)
  • NSW Selective Entry โ€” Thinking Skills + Mathematical Reasoning (Year 6)
  • QLD Academies EduTest โ€” Verbal + Numerical Reasoning (Year 6)
  • SA Ignite HAST โ€” Mathematical + Abstract Reasoning (Year 6)
  • WA GATE ASET โ€” Quantitative + Abstract Reasoning (Year 6)
  • ACER Scholarship tests โ€” Humanities (Verbal) + Maths Reasoning (Years 5โ€“11)
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: GA is highly improvable with practice. Students who practise reasoning questions regularly โ€” even 10 minutes per day โ€” show measurable improvement within weeks. Start early: Year 4 is ideal for students aiming at Year 7 selective entry.
