✍️ Lever 1: Written Expression – Biggest Upside

📚 Read 2 published essays per week
Read quality writing in newspapers (The Guardian long-form, The Monthly) and notice: how do good writers open? How do they use specific details? How do they end?
✏️ Deliberate vocabulary upgrade drill
After each mock, circle every weak adjective in your writing. Find a more precise or evocative replacement. Do this for 10 minutes.
🎯 Practise planning only
Spend 5 minutes writing plans (not full essays) for 3 different prompts. Volume of planning practise builds speed on exam day.

📚 Lever 2: Humanities – Inference Speed

📰 Inference drills
Find a quality news article. After reading, write 5 questions that test inference (what the author implies, not states). Then answer them. This builds the reasoning skill ACER tests.
⏱️ Time yourself per question
Use a stopwatch per question in practice. Students who track per-question time improve Humanities scores by 8-15% within 4 weeks.

🔢 Lever 3: Maths – Method Confidence

Hesitation in maths wastes time. The goal is not to know more content – it is to have 5-6 core methods so automatic that you apply them instantly. Identify your 3 weakest methods and drill ONLY those for 15 minutes daily for 2 weeks.

What Top-Scoring Students Do Differently

Habit Principle How to implement
They plan every piece of writing 5-minute plan produces a better 20-minute essay than 25 minutes unplanned. Never skip planning.
They substitute answers back For MC: mentally plug their answer back into the question. Does it work? Catches ~15% of avoidable errors.
They review WHY, not just WHAT For each wrong answer: what principle did I miss? Builds transferable pattern recognition.
They practise timed every time Never practice without a stopwatch. Exam conditions are a skill you must train.
They target their weakest area Not general revision – focused drilling on 1-2 weaknesses. Improvement is non-linear – fix weak spots first.
